Amgen Specialist IS Architect - Content Management in Thousand Oaks, California

Amgen is seeking a Specialist IS (Information Systems) Architect - Content Management who will work on our Analytics and Knowledge Management (AKM) team. The Architect will report to the Senior Manager of Data and Analytics and will work out of our Amgen's global headquarters in Thousand Oaks, California.

The Architect plays an integral role in building a holistic view and roadmap of the company's information technology strategy, processes and platforms so as to deliver on the company's mission and vision. Accordingly, the Incumbent partners with both functional IS leads, business leads and technology partners to ensure that proposed technical solutions align with the company's overall objectives and enterprise architecture direction.

The Architect will be responsible in defining, developing & evolving our application integration strategy centered on unstructured content management. Further, the Architect will be responsible for ensuring that content management solutions meet regulatory standards of the Pharmaceutical industry. The Incumbent will define integration standards and best practices for integration of applications running in SaaS or On Premise models within the content management domain, working closely with Functional IS, SaaS vendors and Amgen partners to assist application development teams in design, development & testing of integrations for content management solutions. The Architect would also act as a thought leader in the future of content management practice including application of emerging innovations across structured authoring, publishing, and search.

AKM services include Advanced Analytics and Data Integration, Big Data technology services, Information Discovery and Search, Information Architecture, Knowledge Management (KM) and

Regulated Content Management.

Key Activities for the Architect include:

  • Defines approaches to ensure data quality, and automate data validation process

  • Responsible as technical lead to drive projects based on agile principles, collaborating with application development teams on design, development & test of integration solutions

  • Builds the long-term strategic roadmap for enterprise regulated content management; aligns IS strategy and planning in this domain with the company's business goals and objectives

  • Interacts with functional IS, business users, SaaS providers & partners to understand & document business requirements, data integration flows, security or compliance requirements for content management solutions

  • Develops and maintains policies, standards, and guidelines to ensure that a consistent framework is applied across the company for regulated content management

  • Partners with functional IS, business and technology subject-matter experts to elicit and translate business requirements into technological solutions

  • Promotes the use of a shared infrastructure and application roadmap to reduce costs and improve how information flows

  • Consults partners and stakeholders on API/Integration strategies

  • Provides solution architecture governance oversight for build teams during assessment, design and delivery of enhancements, projects and data and process changes

  • Delivers and continuously improves the Solution Architecture service while driving change across the IS function with the continued engagement of key stakeholders and opinion leaders.

  • Seamlessly integrates business and service strategy into the enterprise architecture roadmap

  • Leads the design and modeling of tactical architectures for delivery, development, and support of projects

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree


Master's degree and 3 years of Information Systems experience


Bachelor's degree and 5 years of Information Systems experience


Associate's degree and 10 years of Information Systems experience


High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Information Systems experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years' experience in a Content Management Architect / Technical Lead Role

  • 5+ years' experience working with software systems validation, SOX, Information Privacy, FDA cGxP and 21 CFR Part 11 regulations

  • In depth understanding of key enterprise content management platforms such as Documentum, D2, OpenText, Veeva including document management, records management and structured authoring approaches

  • Working knowledge of Cloud and Data Integration, within the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry

  • Experience with analysis of data, file structures, format transformations, data mapping & protocol mediation

  • Ability to translate strategic opportunities and emerging technology solutions into tangible pragmatic executable plans

  • Ability to 'think big' and challenge conventional wisdom regarding technology refresh and hype

  • Experience with Application Integrations using SOA/ESB/Web Services or EDI

  • Familiarity with SaaS, iPaaS/PaaS & IaaS based Application delivery models

  • Experience with HTTP, JSON, XML, REST principles, with application of it in one or more programming language

  • Strong understanding of networking protocols & applications (TCP/IP, load balancing, firewalls etc.)

  • Understanding of authentication protocols, & internet security standards

  • Strong Service Delivery mindset with demonstrated functional domain experience

  • Strong consultative, collaboration, and process improvement skills

  • Ability to leverage experience in delivering and supporting global information systems in a regulated environment for a diverse and distributed user base while relying on various Enterprise Shared Services

  • Effective internal & external relationships and operating across functional boundaries

  • Comfortable with ambiguity and willing to take principled bets on new technology

  • Ability to establish, implement, and enforce appropriate IS standards to meet business specifications
