Amgen Senior Associate Scientist in Thousand Oaks, California
The Laboratory Animal Sciences (LAS) functional group is looking for an experienced individual that is process-oriented and motivated to lead the Animal Welfare Compliance unit in LAS. This position has both external and internal facing responsibilities that are critical to assure the welfare of research animals used to support drug discovery. The primary responsibility of this role will be to lead the animal welfare compliance program for internal and external (CRO and academia) in vivo efforts sponsored by Amgen. The qualified individual should be able to perform the job independently with minimal supervision. The LAS group is part of the Safety Pharmacology and Animal Research Center and supports all animal-based research at Amgen.
Develop, implement and maintain quality system required to achieve and maintain compliance with animal welfare standards, company policies, as well as all applicable regulatory requirements.
Perform periodic audits (both internally and externally) with the goal of identifying gaps that will lead to continuous improvement of the animal welfare and quality management system
Evaluate internal quality documents, SOPs and continuous improvements on program of veterinary care and vivarium management
Establish the external vendor animal welfare audit strategy and program
Accountable for vendor governance, on-boarding, contract management, managing KPI with vendors and oversight of animal welfare across all external business partners such as contract research organizations, research service providers and academic labs
Provide oversight for in vivo staff training effectiveness, implementation of new training sessions and modules, and training documentation related to animal welfare
Management of one or more direct report
Educate Amgen stakeholders on the importance of animal welfare compliance via seminars, white paper publication, peer reviewed publications etc.
Serve as a 3Rs science subject matter expert available to consultant with Amgen stakeholders responsible for developing in vivo studies
Serve as 3Rs representative on external animal welfare associations, external coalitions and consortiums providing industry alignment on animal welfare practices.
Master’s degree and 3 years of in vivo research experience
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of in vivo research experience
5+ years of experience working in animal welfare audit and compliance with clear understanding of national and international animal welfare regulations
AALAS certification at the LATG level and/or other laboratory animal certifications
Lean six sigma white belt certification
Quality auditor certificate from ASQ
Previous clinical experience treating animals in a research setting
Master’s degree in animal science or related science field
Possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills; can communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Self-motivated, able to work independently, highly organized with a strong attention to detail
Ability to handle multiple (multi-task) and changing priorities along with fluctuations in the workload
High proficiency with basic and advanced techniques (dosing, blood collection) for multiple species
Working knowledge of The Guide, USDA regulations.
Excellent communication and relationship building skills
