Amgen’s Process Development (PD) organization is seeking a highly motivated and creative scientist to join our rapidly expanding High-Throughput Experimentation (HTE) team at Thousand Oaks, CA. HTE team members are responsible for accelerating scientific innovation and advancing the synthetics pipeline through rapid, automated parallel experimentation.

The successful candidate will utilize automation and HTE to support a range of process development activities, from route scouting to route optimization to process characterization, and will work cross-functionally with medicinal chemists, process chemists, chemical engineers, and analytical chemists to advance Amgen’s synthetic portfolio across all phases of development.

Scientific/Technical Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with process chemists/chemical engineers to execute and analyze high-throughput parallel experimentation (HTE) studies for reaction optimization, extraction studies, solubility measurements, crystallization, etc.

  • Actively contribute to drug substance development teams by providing project updates, data interpretation, and technical recommendations.

  • Operate and troubleshoot laboratory automation tools and/or equipment.

  • Coordinate with third-party vendors and Amgen’s laboratory asset management service for preventative maintenance, calibration, and repair service of equipment and instruments.

  • Maintain good laboratory documentation practices and compliance with electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) guidelines.

  • Provide training to laboratory staff on equipment and software usage.

  • Install, qualify, and maintain laboratory equipment and chemical inventories.

Basic Qualifications

Master’s degree in chemistry


Bachelor’s degree in chemistry & 2 years of directly related experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in chemistry with 2+ years of research experience in organic synthesis and/or methodology by June 2022

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in synthetic chemistry

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral), leadership skills and the ability to work well in teams

  • Experience in analytical techniques such as NMR, HPLC, GC, and MS

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ChemDraw, and SciFinder

  • Experience with automation systems (e.g., Unchained Labs, Andrew Alliance, Chronect, etc.) and data visualization software (e.g., Spotfire) is preferre
