Amgen Principal Scientist - Molecular Biology in Thousand Oaks, California

The Biologics department is seeking a highly motivated Principal Scientist to lead the molecular biology group in Biologics Optimization at our state-of-the-art research facility at the Amgen headquarters in Thousand Oaks, CA. The Biologics Optimization group is responsible for the optimization, production, assessment, and selection of large molecule therapeutic drug candidates. The Principal Scientist will be a part of a multidisciplinary team with capabilities in protein engineering, cloning, expression and purification of large molecule drug candidates.


Scientific and technical leadership.

Championing innovative ideas and facilitating the development and implementation of technologies to improve efficiency and decrease cycle times of molecular biology workflows.

Solving complex technical problems.

Working both independently and in cross-functional teams.

Evaluation and oversight of molecular biology external partnering opportunities.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 3 years scientific experience


Master's degree and 6 years of scientific experience


Bachelor's degree and 8 years scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. and 7+ years of biotech/pharma industry experience with emphasis on protein engineering, molecular cloning, vector development, and protein production in various expression hosts.

Experience in managing laboratory staff.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work flexibly in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Experience with automated liquid handling platforms and high throughput cloning methods.

Strong knowledge of expression construct design, cell engineering and expression strategies for broad classes of proteins.

Understanding of protein engineering and protein biophysical and biochemical properties that relate to molecule stability.

Proven experience with data mining from complex data sets.

Experience working with contract research organizations providing molecular biology services.

Demonstrated a strong track record of independent critical thinking and scientific achievement in research, exemplified by publications in highly regarded journals, conference presentations or generation of intellectual property.
