Amgen Operations Business Development Technical Lead in Thousand Oaks, California


The Operations Business Development Lead plays a critical role in enabling Amgen to both evaluate external additions to our portfolio and to monetize deprioritized assets via licensing or divestiture. This individual reports into the Global Operations Planning function of Process Development, and is the single point of contact for Amgen's Business Development group during deal evaluation including acquisition, in-licensing, and out-licensing activities. This individual is responsible for conducting initial Operations-specific (Manufacturing, Process development, Supply chain) due diligence activities on potential targets, including risk assessment and executive summary read-outs. The work this individual does is provided to the Operations Leadership Team and is used to form an opinion on the viability and value of a potential transaction, as well as resources - both FTE and outside expense - needed to support the deal. This is a high visibility role that requires technical understanding of biologic and synthetic development and manufacturing processes, a basic understanding of finance/accounting, a differentiated skill in dealing with ambiguity and making recommendations with less than perfect information, and is confident presenting to senior executives. The ideal candidate will be a Drug Substance process development scientist, with Drug Product and Attribute Science experience as well.


Doctorate degree and 2 years of Manufacturing, Operations and/or Process Development experience


Master's degree and 6 years of Manufacturing, Operations and/or Process Development experience


Bachelor's degree and 8 years of Manufacturing, Operations and/or Process Development experience


  • Biologics and/or synthetics Drug Substance development and manufacturing experience including pre-pivotal and pivotal programs

  • Drug Product and/or Attribute Science Process Development experience

  • Experience directly dealing with Contract Manufacturing organizations

  • CMC Regulatory and/or Product Quality experience

  • Clear understanding of Amgen Process Development activities, timelines, and costs needed to advance a molecule to IND and to MA

  • Ability to lead a cross-functional team with confidence, and to recognize when escalation and assistance are needed

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to distill large amounts of technical analysis into clear, concise, executive summaries that facilitate senior management decision-making

  • Dealing with ambiguity and making recommendations based on imperfect information/data

  • Understanding of finance/accounting

  • Ability to handle numerous projects concurrently

  • Travel up to 10%
