Amgen Grad Intern - Data Science in Thousand Oaks, California

Amgen's 10 - 12 week internship program offers meaningful project experiences that impact patient's lives. This internship provides the opportunity for executive and social networking events and to participate in community volunteer projects while providing a competitive compensation.

We are seeking an intern to play a major role in how we architect, visualize, and interpret critical data that is at the very core of our business. As a Data Science Intern, you will be challenged with uncovering analytical insights through data mining and statistics and you will have the opportunity to translate those insights into actionable decisions for the business. You will gain first-hand experience solving some of the challenging problems facing the biotech industry today.

The Data Science internship is uniquely aligned to Amgen's newly developed full-time Data Science Rotation Program. This three-year rotation program exposes staff to three different Data Science related roles with potential opportunities in Research & Development, Global Commercial Operations, Strategy & Innovation, Information Systems, and other areas of the organization. Starting from Day One, interns are introduced to the many nuances and complexities of our organization and are asked to think creatively and independently to influence and drive decision-making.

Basic Qualifications

Amgen requires that all individuals applying for a grad internship or a co-op assignment at Amgen must meet the following criteria:

18 years or older

Graduated with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a 3.0 minimum GPA or equivalent

Completion as a first year graduate student before internship starts and currently enrolled in a MBA program for a MBA internship OR a Master's program for a Masters internship OR a PharmD program for a PharmD internship OR PhD for a PhD internship from an accredited college or university

Enrolled in an accredited college or university following the potential internship or co-op assignment

Must not be employed at the time the internship starts

Preferred Qualifications

Degree concentration(s) in Data Science; Computer Science; Biomedical, Computer, or Software Engineering; Mathematics; Computational Chemistry or Biology; Statistics; Information Systems; Relevant Programs

Junior standing with graduation in Summer 2020

Demonstrated aptitude and exposure with industry standard tools to execute and automate the more technical aspects of statistical data analysis, including SQL, R, SAS, Python (or equivalent)

Programming Experience: familiarity with C++, R, MATLAB, Python

Experience with formal Agile project methodologies

Database Experience: SQL query, (familiarity with Hive/Hadoop, Mongo, Pandas)

Big Data Storage Tools: AWS, virtual machines

Data visualization tools: Tableau, Spotfire or similar

Basic understanding of application development methodologies and techniques, as well as the knowledge and skills to advise users of a proposed software's functionality

Highly motivated, self-starting nature; capable of and comfortable with independent critical thinking and problem solving; energized by change and challenge

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a particularly well-developed ability to display data and lead audiences to logical conclusions

Strong team player who is able to collaborate with colleagues on complex tasks

Track record of successfully owning, planning, and implementing multi-faceted projects
