Amgen Global Sr. Category Manager - Agency, Media, Print in Thousand Oaks, California

The Global Category Strategic Sourcing Senior Manager will be responsible for $300M spend in Agencies and Media globally (excluding pass through costs) which includes: Advertising (DTC and non-DTC), Digital, Public Relations, Medical Communications, Customer Experience and Multi-Channel / Production Execution Services; and, will be accountable for developing and managing the overall sourcing and supplier management processes for this category.

The role may be offered as a team lead depending on candidate and relevant experience across categories. The role reports into the Director of Global Strategic Sourcing, US Commercial Engagement, Data and Sales & Marketing Vertical Lead.

This role includes five sets of responsibilities:

Developing category strategies:

  • Deliver customer solutions via multi-year category strategies in alignment with your stakeholder annual plans

  • Lead with oversight to the overall sourcing process for your category(ies) across multiple functional groups including ex-US regions

  • Build a pipeline of category projects as the global lead in collaboration with procurement leader peers and key stakeholders; lead and participate in ideation sessions with business partners

  • Bring industry/business function-specific knowledge and experience

  • Customize sourcing strategy to drive value in specific functional environment, including legal & regulatory context

  • Initiate/build industry peer relationships bringing back best practice/innovation for the category

Stakeholder Engagement Strategy and Management:

  • Act as a trusted business advisor providing thought leadership and consistent customer service whilst delivering qualitative and quantitative value to the bottom line through cost savings and transformation through innovation

  • Engage in key business partner forums including appropriate governance and steering committees

  • Align with finance on productivity reporting

Create value for customers

  • Acts as an ambassador for the GSS function with the business

  • Demonstrated connected thinking and strategy beyond the category with pull through

  • Drive operating efficiencies by understanding evolving and complex business needs and supply markets

  • Access supplier capability and innovation for the business

  • Manage, minimize and mitigate supply/contractual risk leveraging key functions where appropriate (Legal, Compliance, Audit etc.)

  • Provides structured management and accurate progress reporting on all projects

  • Achieve value targets continually developing new and innovative sourcing strategies to address the category as it evolves

  • Lead complex RFP including strong commercial negotiations, supporting the team with data analytics, leading supplier evaluations and shepherding the contractual negotiations in collaboration with stakeholders and business partners (Legal, Compliance, Audit etc).

Optional: Lead Sales and Marketing Vertical

  • Be accountable for S&M vertical of categories, including Sales Support

  • Build and Develop team on sourcing processes, strategies, etc

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree and 2 years of Sourcing and/or Finance and/or Management Consulting and/or Agency experience

OR

Master’s degree and 6 years of Sourcing and/or Finance and/or Management Consulting and/or Agency experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of Sourcing and/or Finance and/or Management Consulting and/or Agency experience

OR

Associate’s degree and 10 years of Sourcing and/or Finance and/or Management Consulting and/or Agency experience

OR

High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Sourcing and/or Finance and/or Management Consulting and/or Agency experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Sales and Marketing categories including Agencies, Media, Digital and Print

  • Understanding of omnichannel / multichannel marketing automation process & technology

  • Experience in leading sourcing teams and/or driving transformation projects

  • Excellent and disciplined project management and prioritization skills with ability to react to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently

  • Can conform to shifting priorities and have ability to drive multiple simultaneous project implementations

  • Experience or aptitude in business development or building collaboration frameworks

Category knowledge

  • In-depth knowledge of the market forces shaping customer’s business context (e.g. legal & regulatory environment, sources of competitive advantage)

  • Ability to identify and utilize multiple supply levers to drive category performance, including the development of collaboration partnerships with suppliers

  • Ability to provide thought leadership to customers and participate in the development of a customer’s strategy through sourcing lens

  • In-depth knowledge of supply base, including market economics, supply base cost structure, supply base trends, supplier segmentation

Analytical & technical

  • Ability to quantify financial benefits for identified set of opportunities and initiatives, to direct business case development

  • Experience at developing cost and financial models

  • Ability to draw insight from analysis, and to effectively summarize and present insight based on the needs of the audience

Change management & relationship management

  • Independent self-starter, able to organize resources to accomplish ambiguous tasks

  • Ability to identify root causes to issues and proactively resolving problems, leveraging cross-functional business partnerships

  • Ability to work in a matrixed organization, across geographic and functional reporting lines

  • Ability to cultivate relationships with key business partners & executives

  • Strong influencing and interpersonal skills
