What you will do

The Executive Director of Data Sciences leads the Computational & Data Sciences (CDS) organization and interacts closely with the Genomics Analysis Unit (GAU) and other stakeholders within Amgen Research and other functions. This executive directly leads a team that applies advanced data analytics to create insights for Research in order to bring differentiating treatments to patients with grievous illnesses. Accountabilities include setting and evolving CDS’ vision, mission and strategies, establishing annual CDS function goals in alignment with Research goals, and ensures the CDS team delivers high quality computational support, predictive models as well as industry leading advanced data analytical methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the CDS function that develops and applies physical and statistical modeling techniques for the discovery and optimization of next generation therapeutics, synthetics or biologics

  • Interact closely with GAU on common needs and opportunities and provide input as needed

  • Coordinates with Therapeutic Discovery and Research leadership in the exploration and implementation of strategic alliances with external centers of excellence

  • Enhance existing or build new partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders (e.g. project-focused collaborators)

  • Advance statistical modeling knowledge in Research

  • Expands data science capability and application domains

  • Coordinate with IS and Amgen data analytical organizations on data and data analytical platform strategies

  • Remain abreast of innovative computational and data science trends in therapeutics discovery

  • Hire, manage and develop staff within the CDS function

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree and 6 years of experience in Computational Sciences, Data Sciences, Engineering, or Exact or Natural Sciences, or equivalent

  • Master’s degree and 10 years of experience in Computational Sciences, Data Sciences, Engineering, or Exact or Natural Sciences, or equivalent OR

  • Bachelor’s degree and 12 years of experience in Computational Sciences, Data Sciences, Engineering, or Exact or Natural Sciences, or equivalent AND

  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Doctorate degree and 12 years in Data Science or Analytics, Bio-or Chemi-Informatics, Computational Sciences, Computer Science, or any specialization with high data sciences content

  • External eminence, strong record of publications in relevant fields

  • Six years of experience in managing data science teams (data ingestion, engineering, and analytics)

  • Experience with setting up and managing strategic multi-year collaborations

  • Experience with in-silico molecular design, multi-omic data analysis, and operations optimization through simulation and modeling.

  • Experience applying modern statistical modeling methods (machine-learning, deep-learning) in a production setting

  • Broad and deep expertise in statistical and physical modeling with applications in the biopharmaceutical sector, and adequate knowledge of IS and data systems

  • Scientific leadership in one or more Research domains such as medicinal or protein chemistry, disease biology, analytical or assay technologies, or the equivalent

  • Well networked within the machine learning, AI academic and industrial community

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate across a complex landscape with leaders across functions (GAU, TD, Discovery Biology, R&D IS, PD)

  • Ability to partner with cross-functional senior leaders to ensure business strategies are carried out throughout CDS

  • Excellent communication skills to interface with senior leadership on behalf of the department

  • Recognized leader in computational and data sciences
