The Amgen Library Director will be part of the R&D Informatics organization, which is focused on delivering digital, data, and technology solutions and products to help achieve Amgen’s R&D vision to benefit patients and societies through transformative medicines. The Amgen Library Director will lead a team of Information Sciences professionals to establish the next generation of Amgen’s corporate library. The Amgen Library enables data-driven decision-making and analytics across functions by licensing and managing external content and platforms, including scientific journals and databases, patent databases, electronic books, industry news, and externally licensed data for global Amgen staff. The Amgen Library director will also be accountable for building new capabilities to support Data Science across Amgen, and to participate and drive Knowledge Management initiatives aimed at bringing awareness of content to Amgen staff as well as making connections among Amgen staff.

The Amgen Library Director will partner extensively with organizations across Amgen, as well as within R&D Informatics, and the broader Digital, Technology, and Innovation (DTI) team. The successful candidate will be a recognized expert in Library and Information Sciences with experience working and negotiating with publishers and content vendors.

As a Director information Systems you will:

  • Build and lead the Amgen Library team

  • Partner with key business stakeholders to understand their data, information and analytics needs and support their business processes

  • Develop Library strategic plan

  • Develop a Library communications strategy

  • Develop a robust external data licensing service to support enterprise analytics

  • Partner with Amgen Finance to manage the annual Amgen Library budget

  • Assist teams with content and data licensing decisions and look for opportunities to drive efficiencies in the management of data assets

  • Oversee the key Library supplier relationships

  • Understand and evaluate available information technologies and services on behalf of Amgen

  • Advance the practice of Knowledge Management (KM) at Amgen through engagement with other KM leaders (both internal and external to Amgen) to further the development of, sharing, and adoption of KM best practices and lessons learned

  • Advance the practice of data science and analytics at Amgen by identifying, evaluating, licensing, and managing high quality content and data resources

  • Partner with Digital Technology & Innovation staff to ensure Library content and data platforms are compliant with Amgen’s run and security requirements

  • Be a role model for Amgen values and leadership behaviors

  • Provide leadership for the development of future Amgen Library leaders

  • Define job roles and recruit talent

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Information Systems experience

OR

Master’s degree and 8 years of Information Systems experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of Information Systems experience

AND

4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences

  • Demonstrated experience leading a Corporate Library, preferably in the Life Sciences industry

  • Experience with direct staff management

  • Experience with STM publishers and suppliers including scientific journals, patents, eBooks, databases, and news platforms such as American Chemical Society, Clarivate Analytics, Copyright Clearance Center, CAS, Elsevier, Informa, Springer, Wiley, Wolters Kluwer, etc.

  • Experience with external content contracts

  • Strong leadership communication skills

  • Contract negotiation experience

  • Demonstrated ability for strategic technology planning and roadmap development; ability to translate strategies into tangible and pragmatic executable plans

  • Experience working with Life Sciences R&D leaders; ability to communicate effectively with scientists, technologists, and business leaders

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate across a matrix organization

  • Strong organizational, planning, and financial management skills

  • Experience in enhancing organizational talent through staff development

  • Good communication skills; ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and management.
