What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. The Digital Process and Systems Analysis (DPSA) organization plays a key role in supporting Amgen’s commercial operations and pipeline development. This cross-functional organization is seeking a Data Scientist to assist with current and future data science projects.

This key role will collaborate with business partners, service owners and IS peers to support and develop custom data science solutions to support Amgen’s Drug Substance organization by improving the efficiency, reliability, and agility of Process Development activities.


  • Work with large and complex datasets to develop and improve data solutions that range from statistical analytics to sophisticated data models and visualizations.

  • Collaborate with IS and Scientific staff to support and improve Electronic Lab Notebooks systems that collect and organize scientific data.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams on projects and/or programs to systematically derive insights that ultimately derive substantial business value for Amgen and our patients

  • Identify business needs and crafting prototypes and demonstrations that integrate data across multiple sources such as SQL databases, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Enterprise Data Lakes, structured files.

  • Present analysis ideas, progress and results to leadership and business partners.

  • Drive workflow changes vital to transform data organization and capture.

  • Ensure IS systems meet business requirements and industry standard methodologies.

  • Maintain compliance with regulatory, security, and privacy requirements as it relates to data assets.

  • The role is open to flexible commuting from Amgen locations at Thousand Oaks or Cambridge.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree or Doctorate's degree by September 2022 OR

  • Master’s degree and 3 years of data science and/or analytics experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of data science and/or analytics experience OR

  • Associate’s degree and 10 years of data science and/or analytics experience OR

  • High school diploma / GED and 12 years of data science and/or analytics experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Science, Engineering, Applied Physics, or Statistics.

  • Experience working with complex scientific datasets organized in files, databases or provided via API.

  • Experience building data visualizations using Spotfire, Tableau or other data visualization platform.

  • Programming experience with Python, R or other data analytics language.

  • Experience with validated laboratory computer systems.

  • Detailed technical proficiency with strong problem solving and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent organization/planning skills and talent for managing many complex tasks simultaneously.

  • Ability to collaborate and influence business partners and other IS resources to drive analytic projects end-to-end.

  • Solid written and verbal communication skills in English and the ability to present analysis results in a clear, precise, and actionable manner.

  • Passion for learning and staying on top of current developments in advanced analytics.

  • Demonstrated the ability to effectively work independently and with individuals located in remote locations.

  • Biotech / Pharma experience.
