Amgen Commercial Insights - Competitive Intelligence Manager in Thousand Oaks, California

This Commercial Insights team member is assigned to provide Competitive Intelligence to the Bone health and Cardiovascular Business Unit (BCBU). The Manager, Competitive Intelligence, is a highly visible role responsible for developing competitive strategy and insights to craft Amgen’s current and future commercial and developmental strategies within the BCBU franchise. The role is a strategic thought partner and analytical specialist to internal key stakeholders who will be the primary knowledge source for the competitive landscapes of interest.

The Manager reports to Senior Manager for Competitive Intelligence (CI) and supports them in developing and presenting key CI deliverables in support of Amgen's strategic objectives. The role works closely with cross-functional commercial, medical and scientific teams to identify, assess and disseminate impactful insights through a clear understanding of business priorities along with broad knowledge of the biopharmaceutical industry.

The position involves conducting hypothesis driven research pertaining to market & competition on variety of scientific and commercial topics including, but not limited to research & clinical development plans, marketing programs, commercialization strategies, and market access programs.

This person will:

  • Synthesize information from multiple sources to develop strategic insights and point of view on key competitive developments, implications to Amgen and actions Amgen must take.

  • Work in a highly cross functional manner and manage changing priorities across several key customers, including Commercial Insights, Marketing, Business Development, Medical Affairs, Clinical, Research, Regulatory, Legal, and Senior Leadership.

  • Develop positive relationships with Global and Regional teams to define business problems and develop integrated analysis plans.

  • Apply structured problem solving to collect, analyze and report CI, incorporating primary and secondary data sources to generate impactful insights.

  • Articulate and educate customers on the relevant impact of changing market dynamics (i.e. reimbursement environment, biosimilar regulations, general environmental factors, etc.) to their business from a CI perspective.

  • Coordinate and facilitate CI collection efforts at major medical conferences/congresses.

  • Manage a network of primary data sources, including vendors and Amgen employees, to enable effective project delivery.

  • Assess the reliability of CI research findings, maintaining high standards for accuracy, relevance, and quality in deliverables at all times and communicate level of evidence to stakeholders.

  • Present on a regular basis in-depth analyses and summaries of results, interpreting and communicating results with recommendations to brand/business stakeholders.

  • Work to grow competitive intelligence/strategy to support other functions in the organization.

  • Abide by and strictly enforce Amgen’s CI Legal and Ethical Guidelines with internal partners and vendors.

  • Travel Expectations: about 15-20%

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree

OR

Master’s degree and 2 years of sales & operations experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of sales & operations experience

OR

Associate’s degree and 10 years of sales & operations experience

OR

High school diploma / GED and 12 years of sales & operations experience

  • Demonstrated analytical skills—understands the advantages and limits of different analytical approaches and studies

  • Ability to work collaboratively in team-based environment

  • Advanced degree (MS/MBA) with either Marketing or Life Science focus
