Amgen Principal IS Business Systems Analyst - Research Informatics in South San Francisco, California

Amgen is seeking a Principal IS Business Systems Analyst to join the multi-site Research & Development Informatics organization at either its Thousand Oaks or its South San Francisco California campus. The Principal IS Business Systems Analyst will report to the Director, Research Informatics supporting the Therapeutic Areas, Genome Analysis Unit and Comparative Biology and Safety Sciences.

The Research Informatics team supports Discovery Research and Translational Research organizations globally with innovative IS and Data Science solutions to accelerate and grow Amgen's pipeline of biopharmaceuticals.   • Performs as the Non-Clinical Safety Service (NCSS) Area Lead and guide the NCSS portfolio through effectively partnering with key service area client stakeholders in order to translate scientific needs into informatics strategies and solutions

  • Responsible for eliciting IS requirements in working with various scientific teams, developing compelling business cases for IS investments, and leading IS implementation projects to deliver value for the R&D organization globally

  • Provides critical thinking and strategic judgment to resolve significant technical and analytic challenges in support of research initiatives across genomics, in vivo pharmacology and toxicology, and pathology domains

  • Leads productive multi-disciplinary teams that include Project Managers, other Business Analysts, Software Architects, Software Engineers, Vendors, Data Scientists and Computational Biologists

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of Information Systems experience


Master's degree and 6 years of Information Systems experience


Bachelor's degree and 8 years of Information Systems experience


Associate's degree and 10 years of Information Systems experience


High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Information Systems experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree or Master's degree in Biological or Computer Science

  • 5+ years of experience in agile software development, business analysis, and/or project management in a Biotech/Pharma Research setting

  • Expertise in a variety of commercial and custom software environments used in early drug discovery and non-clinical safety activities, and employ that expertise to advise and support members of the scientific staff

  • Demonstrated track record of delivering innovative IS solutions in a Biotech/Pharma Research setting with solutions that employ continuous integration, microservices, containerization, content analytics, semantic technologies and deep learning

  • Deep understanding of scientific and business processes and issues in the early discovery research and translational science phase of drug development

  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate software requirements within and across business units and an ability to translate requirements that can be implemented in informatics and IS solutions

  • Experience with analysis and integration of diverse data types utilized in pharmaceutical and life sciences research

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and sufficient subject matter expertise to be able to communicate effectively with scientific partners

  • High learning agility, innovation, and problem solving skills

  • Ability to lead, manage and develop staff members
