Associate Scientist - Protein Expression and Cell Biology
What you will do
Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this scientific role, you will conduct recombinant protein expression using mammalian expression systems. Amgen’s Therapeutic Discovery organization is seeking a hard-working, team-oriented Associate Scientist to join the Protein Technologies group at our South San Francisco site. Protein Technologies designs and generates drug discovery program-enabling reagents to support therapeutic programs and innovative modalities. The candidate will work closely with protein expression staff, as well as colleagues in protein engineering, cloning and purification groups.
Expression of recombinant proteins using mammalian cell hosts (e.g. bi-specific mAb, diverse secreted and membrane-anchored proteins in CHO and HEK cells)
Small-scale high-throughput transient and stable pool expression
Resolving protein expression challenges by collaboration, reading literature, and implementing novel methods
Performing small to larger-scale (30L) protein production runs, analyzing harvested culture media by SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, Octet, etc. to determine secretory titer and protein product quality
Summarizing and reporting results according to record keeping requirements (e-notebook, LIMS)
Contributing to technology development initiatives through conceptualization, experimentation and implementation
What we expect of you

Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related subject area, and 4 years of scientific laboratory experience OR
Master’s Degree in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related subject area and 2 years of scientific laboratory experience
Prior experience in recombinant protein production using mammalian expression systems in biotech/pharma industry
An ability to solve complex problems and to work both independently and in teams
Extensive hands-on experience in one or more of the following areas:
Cell line and cell phenotype engineering using HEK 293 and/or CHO cells
Producing secretory molecules such as bi-specific and multi-specific antibodies
Robotic liquid handling (e.g. TECAN) and high-throughput protein expression
Running Wave or other bioreactors with disposable vessels at 5-30L scale
Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
