Live

This could be your everyday

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. Today everyone knows that our ability to fight infectious diseases depends on antibodies. It is less known that many other illnesses, including cancers, metabolic and autoimmune disorders, can be treated with antibody-based therapeutics. These antibodies are carefully selected to bind specific antigen, which is often a protein in the membrane of patient’s cells. Screening for antibodies with desired properties is a key step in drug discovery requiring high quality antigen formulations.

During this co-op program, you will explore nanoparticles as means to present target membrane proteins in native form for antibody screening. You will learn several laboratory techniques, such as protein expression and purification, chromatography, cell culture and cell sorting. You will work closely with a supervisor and other scientists to advance antigen formulations that facilitate the discovery of antibodies against challenging protein targets to help fight serious diseases.

Essential Functions:

  • Cell culture and protein expression

  • Protein purification and chromatography

  • Flow cytometry

  • Literature research and experiment design

  • Data presentation and critical evaluation
