Amgen Principal Scientist- Mammalian Expression in Thousand Oaks, California

The Biologics department is seeking a highly motivated Principal Scientist to lead the mammalian expression group in Biologics Optimization at our state-of-the-art research facility at the Amgen headquarters campus located in Thousand Oaks, CA.

The Biologics Optimization group is responsible for the optimization, production, assessment, and selection of large molecule therapeutic drug candidates. The Principal Scientist will be a part of a multidisciplinary team with capabilities in molecular design, protein engineering, cloning, expression and purification of therapeutic protein candidates.

Responsibilities:

Scientific leadership, championing innovative methods to support and improve mammalian expression technologies and bioprocess, facilitating the development of automation solutions for expression workflows, and enabling technologies to improve expression levels and outcomes as well as the ability to lead an efficient and productive team, solve technical problems, and work both independently and in cross-functional teams.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 3 years of scientific experience

OR

Master's degree and 6 years of scientific experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 8 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. and 7+ years of biotech/pharma industry experience with emphasis on protein expression and production, especially with common mammalian transient and stable platforms as well as production/fermentation in WAVE reactors or other disposable reactor technologies.

Strong knowledge of cell biology, expression construct design, cell engineering and expression strategies for broad classes of proteins.

Understanding of protein engineering and protein biophysical properties that relate to molecule stability and posttranslational modifications.

Experience with automated liquid handling platforms and high throughput and high content assays.

Proven experience with data mining from complex data sets of biological readouts to gain new insights. Familiarity with DOE methods.

Experience in managing laboratory staff.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work flexibly in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Demonstrated a strong track record of independent critical thinking and scientific achievement in research, exemplified by publications in highly regarded journals, conference presentations or generation of intellectual property.
