The University of Southern California (USC) and Amgen are pleased to announce the

Amgen-USC Postdoctoral Fellowship Program The program provides outstanding research opportunities and career mentorship for exceptional postdoctoral fellows who are interested in academic research as well as biotechnology. The fellows will be co-mentored by a faculty member at USC and a scientist at Amgen. The program's research focus is to use the most advanced stem cell and regenerative medicine technology in the areas of: neuroscience; skeletal, renal and cardiovascular biology; and metabolism. Applicants will have completed their PhDs within the last six months before the program's start date. The three-year program includes two years at USC and one year at Amgen. Successful candidates will be selected by a committee formed by both USC faculty and Amgen scientists. When the fellowship ends and depending on their performance, the fellows may have the opportunity to pursue potential career opportunities at either USC or Amgen.

Basic Qualifications

PhD at the time of appointment

Preferred Qualifications

Strong molecular biology background and demonstrable success in cloning, expressing, purifying and characterizing proteins of various sizes

Expertise in mammalian expression systems

Understanding of the molecular determinants of protein stability and conformational flexibility and the impact of protein surface and buffer conditions on a) solution properties such as aggregation propensity and viscosity and b) frozen-state stability and stability as a lyophilized product

Highly developed independent research agenda which will be encouraged and materially supported during tenure in Amgen

Perform with minimal supervision to seek solutions to well-defined problems and able to distill complex problems into a series of experimentally verifiable sub-problems

Prior exposure to molecular modeling and/or protein engineering

High quality first author publications based on their PhD research

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are critical attributes for success in this role
