Amgen Director, Media Relations, Corporate Affairs in Thousand Oaks, California

Amgen is seeking a Media Relations Director at its main headquarters in Thousand Oaks, CA to join the Corporate Affairs team and report to the Executive Director.

This individual will lead Amgen's long-lead media strategy, responsible for planning and placing compelling stories about Amgen's science and therapeutic areas in long-lead consumer publications. They will interface with numerous cross-functional partners to identify and deliver compelling narratives.

Key Responsibilities:

Build and execute enterprise-wide long-lead consumer media strategy

Coordinate with R&D, product and other Amgen communicators to create compelling narratives, editorial and syndication calendars

Create targeted media storylines and supporting collateral

Develop strong relationships with long-lead consumer outlets

Pitch and successfully place long-lead media opportunities

Media train key Amgen spokespeople

Coordinate interviews for key Amgen spokespeople

Manage and direct public relations agency partners to assure maximum impact and assistance in reaching desired communications goals and objectives

Domestic travel up to 20%

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Public Relations experience


Master's degree and 7 years of Public Relations experience


Bachelor's degree and 9 years of Public Relations experience

Preferred Qualifications

Biotechnology, pharmaceutical or other highly regulated industry communications experience, including corporate experience preferred

Excellent consulting, writing, editing (photo/video/text), presentation and communication skills

Strategic and creative thinker with ability to develop actionable programs that integrate soundly with business objectives

Working knowledge of and history of interaction with long-lead healthcare journalists and outlets

Ability to interface professionally with corporate leaders and managers

Ability to think quickly, analytically and creatively to accommodate a dynamic communications environment

Excellent interpersonal skills; enthusiastic, team player and self-starter; serious commitment to hard work and excellence
