Amgen Director of Data and Analytics in Tampa, Florida

Amgen is seeking a Director of Data and Analytics to join the Analytics and Knowledge Management (AKM) team and will report to the Executive Director, Advanced AKM. The Director will be based out of Amgen's Capability Center in Tampa, FL. Our new Tampa Capability Center provides essential services that enable us to better pursue this mission. This state-of-the-art center serves as a base for finance, information systems, and human resources professionals to make a meaningful impact at one of the world's leading biotechnology companies.

The Director will be responsible for platform strategy and evolution of enterprise data and analytics capabilities to support Amgen's emerging strategy for unlocking knowledge through innovative advanced analytics, machine-learning capabilities, search and improved information asset management. The Director will set the technical direction of platform investments in innovative new platforms, manage the solution engineering of client-funded projects, and be responsible for the ongoing development and operations of global enterprise analytics products / platforms such as the Enterprise Data Lake, Enterprise Data Marketplace, Enterprise Search, Enterprise Analytics / Business Intelligence, Enterprise Regulated Content Management and Data Science Platforms. These platforms or products are key to delivering a sustainable and cost-effective analytics and information ecosystem across Amgen's business functions.

AKM services include Advanced Analytics and Data Integration, Big Data technology services, Information Discovery and Search, Information Architecture, Knowledge Management (KM) and Regulated Content Management.

Key Activities for the Director include:

Manages and shapes platform development, optimizes service management and delivers client projects across an Operational Expenditure and project budget of $40-50 Million

Manages portfolio demand and finances across both platform and client project delivery

Manages, mentors and grows the talent of approximately 40 full-time staff and oversees approximately 200 outsourced resources in multiple locations globally

Establishes or evolves services and platforms as appropriate to accelerate adoption and value realization of emerging technologies including data science, natural language processing, content analytics, augmented reality, machine learning / artificial intelligence

Collaborates with headquarter-based product delivery managers on client demand, product backlog and setting platform direction based on business strategy and is responsible for client project delivery

Builds strong relationship with third party suppliers; owns vendor management

Drives down Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by establishing appropriate information architecture to avoid silos in the ecosystem and reduces redundant capabilities through rationalization and appropriate enterprise reference architecture standards for all platforms

Acts as a champion for Data and Analytics services and is responsible for developing effective communication and training vehicles for other IS and business teams on platform services and roadmaps as well as certification programs for other areas to develop using our platforms

Leads as a member of the Amgen Capability Center Site leadership team responsible for overall success of the site including building and measuring KPIs and establishing an innovative culture at the site

Acts as a thought leader on emerging digital business models and technologies, with a focus on external technology scanning as a significant contributor to Amgen's overall analytics and data strategy

Builds and maintains external relationships with industry bodies, vendors and technology analysts to learn, influence and attract best talent by promoting Amgen as an innovative place to work

Builds partnerships with local universities to foster innovative thinking and expose team to emerging capabilities as well as provide a talent recruiting pipeline

20% domestic travel can be expected

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Data and/or Analytics experience


Master's degree and 8 years of Data and/or Analytics experience


Bachelor's degree and 10 years of Data and/or Analytics experience


4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

10+ years of analytics, search or data management experience, including 5+ years' experience in managing multiple, medium to large, cross-functional teams or projects

Deep understanding of the evolving analytics world on both the demand side (how people/companies are using technology) and the supply side (emerging technologies)

Prior experience implementing and managing multiple large, complex platforms using technologies listed under Key Platforms (or similar)

Proven track record of appropriate risk-taking and an aptitude for introducing positive disruption in business processes, technologies and delivery approaches

Experience driving cross-functional, large-scale technology introduction and innovation

3+ years of experience in managing in a highly regulated environment (Pharmaceutical, Bio-technology, Food, Beverage, Healthcare, or related industry) fulfilling GxP and SOX requirements

Strong communications, presentation, and organizational skills

Excellent leadership skills and proven communication, organizational and customer-facing skills
