Amgen Data Scientist - Process Development Drug Substance Technology Engineering (PD) in Cambridge, Massachusetts

As a Data Scientist, you will evaluate and improve Amgen's products, collaborating as part of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers on a wide range of problems. The position will bring analytical rigor and statistical methods to the challenges of drug substance manufacturing, improving process performance, and understanding root causes for variation. The successful candidate will lead implementation of analytical solutions that enable enterprise-wide information knowledge management.

Expected travel will be mostly domestic (minimal international) 10% of the time.

*Work with large, complex data sets. Solve difficult, non-routine analysis problems, applying advanced analytical methods as needed. Conduct end-to end analysis that includes data gathering and requirements specifications, processing, analysis, ongoing deliverables, and presentations

*Build and prototype analysis tools to provide insights. Develop comprehensive understanding of Amgen data structures and metrics, advocating for changes where needed for process improvements

*Interact cross-functionally with a wide variety of people and teams. Work closely with engineers to identify opportunities for process design improvements for Amgen products

*Make business recommendations (cost-benefit, forecasting, scenario analysis) with effective presentation of findings to multiple level of stakeholders through visual display of quantitative information

*Partner to develop and implement analysis, forecasting, and optimization methods to improve the quality of Amgen's processes.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree


Master's degree and 4 years of Scientific, Engineering, Systems Engineering, Applied Mathematics or Bioinformatics experience


Bachelor's degree and 6 years of Scientific, Engineering, Systems Engineering, Applied Mathematics or Bioinformatics experience

Preferred Qualifications:

MS degree in a quantitative discipline (statistics, operations research, chemical mathematics, computer science, systems engineering, industrial engineering)

3+ years of relevant work experience in data analysis or related field (eg as a statistician, data scientist, computational biologist, bioinformatician)

Experience with statistical software (e.g. R, MATLAB, SAS) and database languages (e.g. SQL)

Experience with statistical data analysis such as linear models, multivariate analysis, and stochastic models

Applied experience with machine learning

Experience articulating business questions and using mathematical techniques to arrive at an answer using available data

Demonstrated skills in selecting the right statistical tools given a data analysis problem

Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills

Demonstrated leadership and self-direction. Demonstrated willingness to both teach others and learn new techniques

Experience with Agile/Iterative Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
